Dr Ani, paediatric urologist, specialises in the treatment of children’s testicular and groin conditions, both congential (from birth) and acquired (developed).
Testicular Maldescent / Undescended Testis (UDT)
Testicular maldescent or undescended testis (UDT) is a common condition. Management in a timely fashion may reduce the risk of malignancy and infertility. Maldescended testis conditions include:
- Undescended testis (UDT)
- Ectopic testis
- Ascending testis
- Impalpable testis
- Retractile testis
Hydrocele
Hydrocele is a condition where fluid gathers around the testicle. While it may not cause serious problems, it can result in uncomfortable swelling in the testicular area and one or both sides of the scrotum can be affected.
Varicocele
Varicoceles, where veins in the scrotum have become large and swollen, is a fairly common condition in children and teens, with about 17 percent of boys between the ages of 13-25 years old found to have this condition. (see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5332232/)
Other Testicular and Groin Conditions
Other testicular conditions that may require immediate medical attention include:
- Testicular Torsion
- Torsion of the appendix testis
- Infection (epididymitis)
- Hernia in the groin area
- Orchitis
